Police in Lancashire fines British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for not wearing seatbelt in a moving car.

Fine was levied after Sunak posted a video on Instagram that showed him riding in a car without seatbelt.

Number 10, Mr. Sunak’s office, said he would pay the penalty, but did not disclose the amount.

In the UK, fine for not wearing a seatbelt is £100 and up to £500 if the matter goes to court.

British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, has been fined after being caught not wearing his seatbelt while making a social media video in a moving vehicle.

The police in Lancashire, in northwest England, levied the fine after Sunak posted a video on Instagram that showed him riding in a car without seatbelt.

The Lancashire police on Friday said :

“You will be aware that a video has been circulating on social media showing an individual failing to wear a seatbelt while a passenger in a moving car in Lancashire.”

“After looking into this matter, we have today issued a 42-year-old man from London with a conditional offer of fixed penalty.”

Sunak was touring three cities in northern England when he uploaded a video on Instagram to promote his ‘levelling-up’ funding in Lancashire.

Number 10, Mr. Sunak’s office, said he would pay the penalty, but did not disclose the amount.

“The prime minister fully accepts this was a mistake and has apologised. He will of course comply with the fixed penalty.”

In the UK, the punishment for not wearing a seatbelt is £100 or about ₦56,400. But this can be increased to a maximum of £500 or about ₦282,000, if the matter goes to court.

The 42 year old officially became the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on Tuesday, 25th October 2022, days after his predecessor, Liz Truss, resigned from the post.
