Watch Defender-inspired YangWang U8 Drive Sideways, Do Moonwalk Like Michael Jackson
Sideways Drive : Watch BYD’s Defender-inspired YangWang U8 SUV do the moonwalk like Michael Jackson.
The 1,100-horsepower Defender-inspired SUV is equipped with a four-motor drive system which allows it to drive sideways.
The motion is produced by rotating the Yangwang U8 SUV’s front and rear tyres in opposite directions on both sides.
U8 can also do 360-degree tank turn, a fit already demonstrated by Rivian R1T SUV as well the upcoming all-electric G-Class.
Yangwang, BYD’s luxury brand, has become the biggest crowd-puller at this year’s 20th Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition (or Auto Shanghai 2023), thanks to its ‘moonwalking’ U8 luxury sports utility vehicle (SUV).
Video taken at the event shows the all-electric U8 SUV driving sideways or let’s say “moonwalking” across a stage like a motorized Michael Jackson. The 1,100-horsepower Defender-inspired SUV is equipped with a four-motor drive system which allows it to drive sideways.
While the GMC Hummer EV uses four-wheel steering to drive diagonally at a 10-degree angle to do the CrabWalk, the U8 uses four independently driven motors to drive sideways. The motion is produced by rotating the Yangwang U8 SUV’s front and rear tyres in opposite directions on both sides.
The rugged U8 off-roader can also do 360-degree tank turn, a fit already demonstrated by the four-motor Rivian R1T SUV as well the upcoming 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQG (all-electric G-Class).
Other impressive features includes a floating water mode and a crab mode as demonstrated by Hummer EV, plus the ability to keep driving at up to 75 mph (120 km/h) with a flat tyre – a feature that is seen on the run-flat tyres.
Yangwang has began pre-sales of the U8 at the 2023 Shanghai auto show at a price of RMB 1,098,000 (about $160,000 at the current exchange). U8 will be available in two versions : the Premium Edition as well the Off-road Master Edition.
