Nearly 290,000 Explorers Are Being Recalled By Ford Due To Roof Trim Flying Off

Following the recent recall of 36,000 Bronco Raptors for loose fender flares, Ford is now recalling 288,314 Explorers (2016–2019) due to roof rail covers prone to detachment.

Ford is recalling 288,314 Explorer SUVs (2016–2019) because roof rail covers may detach while driving. This precautionary recall covers vehicles that either missed a previous fix or received ineffective repairs, though only 1% are estimated to be affected.

Ford’s latest recall of 288,314 Explorers stems from ineffective prior epoxy repairs and degradation of mounting clips due to heat and wear. Owners should monitor for wind noise, rattles, or visible gaps, as these indicate the roof rail covers may be loosening.

In March 2026, the NHTSA reported 46 complaints of loose roof rail covers, revealing that previous adhesive repairs were failing while 2021 push-pin fixes remained secure. Detached covers pose a significant road hazard; although no injuries are reported, one accident has been linked to a failed adhesive repair.

Ford will notify owners to visit a dealership for a free inspection. Technicians will check for push-pin fasteners; if missing, they will replace damaged parts and install four additional push pins per side at no cost, providing a more durable fix than previous adhesive repairs.

Dealers have been notified. Owners will receive mail by August 28, with final repair notices arriving in late September. Check your VIN online to confirm if your vehicle is affected.
