Newsom had on Tuesday test-drove an electric Yangwang U8 luxury SUV ahead of his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
As expected, Governor Newsom promoting a Chinese EV maker sparked backlash from California Republicans.
Republican lawmakers have blasted the Governor Of California, Gavin Newsom, after the Democrat promoted Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker, BYD and its Yangwang U8 during his weeklong diplomatic visit to China.
Newsom had on Tuesday test-drove an electric Yangwang U8 luxury SUV ahead of his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Wednesday to promote cooperation in curbing climate change.
“This is another leap in technology, the next-level leap and I did not expect and I appreciate this technology,” he told reporters while behind the wheel of the BYD U8 electric SUV.

“Incredible, absolutely, and a beautiful car. The design, functionality, weight, and weight distribution.”
Newsom then jokingly said “I want two of them” when asked if he wanted to take the $150,000 Yangwang U8 SUV back to California in the United States.
As expected, the clip of Newsom promoting a Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker during his diplomatic visit to China sparked backlash from California Republicans.
“Governor Newsom ought to know that China isn’t a trusted partner and shouldn’t be an example for us to follow,” Rep. Darrell Issa, told FOX Business, adding that “Endorsing Beijing manufacturing — so much of which is stolen from American innovators”
“Governor Newsom is more interested in promoting Chinese companies than American,” Rep. Doug LaMalfa, also told FOX Business in statement, adding that “Ultimately, anything produced in China will be dirtier and produced with potential slave labor.”
