Will McLaren Reintroduce The Manual Gearbox?
Manual gearboxes are seeing a resurgence in high-end performance cars. Following moves by Ferrari, Hennessey, and Porsche, reports suggest McLaren is developing a new model with a three-pedal manual transmission.
Reports from TheSupercarBlog indicate that the project is internally designated as the “P50.” While this name shares no connection with the Peel P50 microcar, it purportedly identifies a forthcoming McLaren model equipped with a manual transmission—a feature the brand has not offered in nearly 30 years. The last instance of a Woking-built vehicle featuring a manual gearbox occurred during the production of the F1 between 1992 and 1998; to this day, that model remains the world’s fastest naturally aspirated production car.
Though only three M6GT prototypes were built, the new McLaren P50 is reportedly heading to production. Plans suggest a limited run of under 100 units, potentially priced above $2.1 million, surpassing the W1 flagship.
It remains uncertain whether the McLaren P50 will incorporate a traditional manual gearbox or a simulated system similar to the Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale, which lacks a direct physical connection between the shifter and the transmission. Regardless, these reports may hold significant merit. Enthusiasts on the McLaren Life forums have been discussing the prospect of a three-pedal McLaren for months, while industry insiders on the German Car Forum have been speculating about the MSO P50 since early 2026, with some suggesting the inclusion of a naturally aspirated engine.
While a twin-turbo setup is safer for emissions, the Solus GT proves McLaren can use a naturally aspirated V10 if the P50 is track-only. The car is rumored to debut at The Quail during Monterey Car Week on August 14. Until confirmed, these details remain speculative, though the GMA T.50 currently stands as the closest successor to the legendary F1.
