Bugatti used Chiron Super Sport ‘Camera Car’ to film W16 Mistral’s open-top car ‘World Record Run’ of 453.91 km/h (282-mph).

While both use the same Bugatti’s W16 engine, the Chiron Super Sport has a record top-speed of 490.48 km/h (307.77 mph).

This makes it easier for the Chiron Super Sport ‘camera car’ to film W16 Mistral’s top-speed record of 453.91 km/h (282-mph).

It’s no news that a W16 Mistral, in the hands of Bugatti’s chief test driver, Andy Wallace, reached 453.91 km/h (282-mph) on November 9th 2024 at ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg to set a new world record for an open-top car.

The W16 Mistral’s record-breaking feat follows three other Bugatti world-record runs that began more than 14 years with a Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, which reached a new speed record of 431.07 km/h (267.85 mph).

The road-going open-top hypercar is part of Bugatti’s record-breaking hypercars, which includes the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, Grand Sport Vitesse, and the Chiron Super Sport 300+.

But how did French hypercar carmaker film the record run to catch up with the record-breaking 1,600-horsepower road-going open-top hypercar?

To film the W16 Mistral, Bugatti unsurprisingly employed the services of Chiron Super Sport since a faster car is needed to chase down the racing supercar.

“How do you film the unthinkable? You pair it with a force just as extraordinary,” says Bugatti in the video caption posted to its social media platforms.

“The art of breaking records : The W16 MISTRAL in motion, captured by the CHIRON Super Sport – perfectly equipped to document the W16 MISTRAL’s open-top speed triumph.”

Like all high-speed chase camera cars, the faster Bugatti Chiron Super Sport that filmed the record run had a camera system attached its rear to capture the W16 Mistral speeding right behind it.

While both use the incarnation of the Bugatti’s 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16 engine, the Chiron Super Sport has a record top-speed of 490.48 km/h (307.77 mph) – making it easier for the ‘camera car’ to film W16 Mistral’s top-speed record of 453.91 km/h (282-mph).
