Volkswagen Group-backed American electric vehicle manufacturer, Rivian Automotive, has jump on the bandwagon after recreating the iconic photoshoot of the early generations of the Volkswagen Transporters (Type 2) driving on the curvy Lombard Street in San Francisco.

In a video posted to Rivian’s Instagram page, participants were driving their R1T pickup trucks and the R1S SUVs through the “crookedest street in the world”, famous for its eight (8) hairpin turns and stunning visual appeal.

“A steep city block with eight hairpin turns? Lombard Street is the pavement equivalent of a black diamond ski run, and we love seeing it filled end-to-end with Rivians in a recent owner electric caravan across San Francisco,” Rivian wrote in its caption.

The R1T is a two-row, five-seat pickup truck, while the R1S is a three-row, seven-seat SUV. Rivian reengineered Max and Large battery packs deliver estimated ranges of up to 420 and 330 miles respectively.

Volkswagen America recently deployed dozens of the retro-styled battery-electric ID Buzz to also replicate this iconic photos, first taken by Peter Alau in 2010.

“We had a blast recreating an iconic photo in a city that sure knows how to spread the #VWLove. We can’t wait to see the all-electric ID. Buzz in your neighborhood next!”
