The BMW I3’s Top Version Is Given A Somewhat Confusing Name

Until now, it was not entirely clear what BMW would name the high-performance top version of the new i3. ‘iM3’ or ‘i3 M’ (with or without a number after it) seemed like obvious options, but it will simply be ‘M3’. Dutch M head Frank van Meel clarified this to Bimmertoday. “Of course, it is also simply called M3. I have never said otherwise, but I also find it interesting that people are talking about an iM3. The M3 was always just M3, regardless of whether it had a four-, six-, or eight-cylinder engine. That doesn’t change even when it is electric.”

There is something to that in itself, were it not for the fact that a fuel-powered M3 is also coming. So when you talk about the new BMW M3 later on, it could be two cars. Some kind of addition is therefore certainly relevant. So the question remains: how will BMW handle that, or will it simply be ‘the electric M3’? Either way, it will be impressive; it will get no fewer than four electric motors and, of course, a body widened in various places. The petrol M3, as we will call the other M3 for now, has a straight-six under the hood again. Or at least, that isn’t so common anymore these days; just look at the Mercedes-AMG C63.
