VW Cut Costing Initiative May Spell The End Of The Jetta, Porsche Taycan, etc
Volkswagen is cutting costs by phasing out several underperforming models, according to recent reports. Although the company hasn’t officially confirmed which vehicles will be discontinued, slow-selling models across the VW, Audi, and Porsche lineups face potential elimination.
Volkswagen may discontinue the Jetta and Taos due to poor sales and shifting market trends. Despite a modest 9.7% increase, Jetta’s 15,949 U.S. Q2 sales lag significantly behind competitors like the Civic and Corolla. Meanwhile, the Taos—VW’s entry-level crossover—saw a 43.9% sales drop to 7,794 units in the same period.
The Fabia’s future is uncertain despite its strong sales of 119,139 units last year. Meanwhile, the Cupra Raval may be discontinued shortly after its debut due to internal competition. Audi is considering cutting crossover coupes like the Q5 and Q6 Sportback, while Porsche may drop the gas-powered Cayenne Coupe and reconsider plans for ICE versions of the 718 Boxster and Cayman.
Volkswagen shifted strategy to include limited gas-powered variants for these models, but their production remains uncertain. Additionally, the Taycan’s future is at risk following a 22% sales drop linked to slower EV adoption. Reports suggest cutting these models could save €6.5 billion by 2031, though Volkswagen officials have declined to comment on the preliminary list.
