Johann Rupert of South Africa on Thursday June 15 overtook Aliko Dangote as Africa’s richest person, according to Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaires ranking released on June 21, which puts his net worth at US $11.7 billion.
Dangote, 66, with a fortune estimated at $10.4 billion, now stands in second place behind Rupert, after the Nigerian cement tycoon fell from his perch as Africa’s richest person for the first time in 12 years.
The 73 year old South African magnate added nearly $3 billion to his fortune over the last year and more than doubled since early 2020, when Forbes estimated it at $4.6 billion.
Rupert is the chairman of Compagnie Financière Richemont, a Switzerland-listed luxury goods powerhouse that boasts brands such as Cartier, Montblanc and Van Cleef & Arpels.
