Anglo-Swiss Consortium Wants To Buy Lamborghini From VW Group For $9.2 Billion

Newly formed Anglo-Swiss consortium wants to buy automobile Lamborghini from Volkswagen (VW) Group for $9 Billion.

Audi, one of several brands under VW Group, purchased Lamborghini in 1998 from Megatech for $110 million.

Lamborghini’s current models include the Huracán, Aventador and Urus – all of which have a starting price well above $200k.

A Zurich-based company, Quantum Group AG, has offered Volkswagen Group a whooping $9.2 billion to buy Automobili Lamborghini despite insisting in the past that the Italian sports car maker is “not for sale”.

According to an exclusive report by Autocar, the newly established Zurich-based holding company has formed a consortium with London-based investment firm Centricus Asset Management with the aim of creating what it describes as a “technology and lifestyle investment platform” under the working title Outlook 2030.

Quantum Group AG is represented in the acquisition offer for Lamborghini by Rea Stark, a co-founder of Piech Automotive. The Zurich-based company is behind the Piëch Mark Zero GT revealed at the 2019 Geneva motor show.

According to reports, both Volkswagen Group chairman Herbert Diess and Audi chairman Markus Duesmann are aware of the acquisition offer for Lamborghini.

Automobili Lamborghini, founded by Ferruccio Lamborghini in 1963, is currently being controlled by Volkswagen Group-owned luxury brand, Audi.

Lamborghini’s current models include the Huracan, Aventador and Urus – all of which rely heavily on Volkswagen Group components. These cars also have a starting price well above $200,000.

Under the vision set out by Quantum Group AG, the Lamborghini brand would become a “spearhead for innovation by consistently implementing new clean drivetrain technologies”.

Together with the proposed acquisition Lamborghini, the letter of intent sets out terms for a strategic partnership between Quantum Group AG and the Volkswagen Group for the future operations of Lamborghini. These includes a five-year supplier agreement with Audi at what is described as “one arm’s length terms”.

Audi, one of several brands under Volkswagen Group, purchased Automobili Lamborghini in 1998 from Megatech for a claimed $110 million.

Megatech, an Indonesian company, was jointly owned by Hutomo Mandla Putra, the youngest son of the country’s then president, Suharto.

Rumours earlier in the year had suggested the Volkswagen Group was interested in selling Lamborghini, but an Audi spokesperson later made it known that “Lamborghini is not for sale.”
