Biden Attends Climate Summit In A ‘Beast’ Limo That Emits 10 Times The Carbon Of An Average Car
Biden attended the Climate Summit in a ‘Beast’ Limo which generates carbon that is 10 times more than an average car.
US President Joe Biden’s ‘Beast’, a 20,000lb armoured limousine, generates 8.75lb of carbon per mile driven.
The 2 Limos – the official vehicle and a decoy – are part of the presidential motorcade that followed Biden to the summit.
Environmentalist have criticized the world leaders, top business executives and other delegates who attended the UN’s COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland after over 400 private jets were reportedly flown to the event.
The number of flights during the last few days was bound to contribute to global warming due to greenhouse gases – mainly carbon dioxide (CO2) – that are emitted during the trip.
Private jets are five to 14 times as polluting as commercial planes on a per passenger basis and 50 times as polluting as trains.
Dr Debbie Hopkins, an expert in decarbonising transport at University of Oxford, said :
“A huge amount of fuel is used during takeoff and landing of a plane, no matter how many people you have on board. So an already polluting mode of transport (commercial aviation) becomes even worse (with private jets)”
World leaders, including US President Joe Biden, attended the climate conference to discuss ways to reduce emissions, which includes cutting down on air travel to reduce carbon emissions.
Emissions per kilometre travelled are known to be significantly worse than any other form of transport. The European advocacy group Transport and Environment added that :
“Private jets are very prestigious, but it is difficult to avoid the hypocrisy of using one while claiming to be fighting climate change.”
And the number of flights isn’t the only contributors to the climate damage as there were also cargo aircrafts carrying helicopters and presidential vehicles for motorcades.
The US is not doubt one of the biggest polluters at the event, with Mr Biden’s Cadillac ‘Beast,’ a 20,000lb armoured limousine, generating an estimated 8.75lb of carbon per mile driven. This figure is about 10 times more than the one from an average car.
The two Beasts, including the official vehicle and a decoy, which form part of his strong presidential motorcade to the event, belch out 1575lbs of CO2 going between Glasgow and Edinburgh, where Biden stays.
And the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland, is set to last until November 12, bringing the total number of emissions from both limousines to just under 20,000lbs.
