Customers in World’s largest auto market, China, gets special Mercedes-Maybach S480 with less power to beat heavy tax.

Chinese government puts heavy road tax on car’s with bigger displacement.

So instead of 496-hp V8 in the S580, the S480 will be powered by a 362 hp V6 engine.

China-only Mercedes-Maybach S480 starts at $225,000, which is $40,000 more than the V8-powered Maybach S-Class.

World famous automakers are always ready to satisfy Chinese customers as the World’s largest auto market remains the only place where they get to make more money.

This time around, Chinese customers will get the China-exclusive Mercedes-Maybach S480 instead of the more powerful S580 that is available in other markets. The reason is because Chinese government puts heavy road tax on car’s with bigger displacement.

So instead of the V8 in the S580, that makes 496 hp and 516 lb-ft, the Maybach S480 will be powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six. This engine makes 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, allowing S480 to sprint to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds.

The China-only Mercedes-Maybach S480 starts at RMB 1,485,000 ( $225,000), which is nearly $40,000 more than the V8-powered Maybach S-Class.

It also packs the same features seen in the S580 that is available in other markets.

These includes the 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment, diamond-stitched leather, Burmester high-end 4D sound system with 30 loudspeakers and ambient lighting.

This isn’t the first time a Mercedes will be getting a less power engine in China to beat up task. The previous-gen S-Class, the G-Class and the CLS were also available with a four-cylinder unit in the People’s Republic.
