Chinese family slammed for burying Mercedes-Benz S-Class (S450L) as offering, ordered to dig the car up.

According to report, the dead relative, a septuagenarian, was reportedly an avid collector of luxury cars.

Mercedes-Benz S450L fitted with a customized number plate “8888” – a number a number synonymous with wealth.

Offered to the affluent in China, the S450L (L for Long Wheelbase) is a top-tier luxury sedan valued at $161,000.

Last month, a Chinese family buried a Mercedes-Benz S-Class (S450L) ultra-luxury sedan as a funeral offering for a deceased relative to ensure his soul’s peaceful passage. The dead relative, a septuagenarian, was reportedly an avid collector of luxury cars.

A viral video seen on TikTok by Autojosh showed an excavator lowing the Mercedes-Benz “offering” into the grave with little help from attendees, after which an earth (soil) was poured on the vehicle wrapped in red cloth.

According to South China Morning Post (SCMP), the extravagant act held on April 19th sparked widespread online backlash, with authorities ordering the family to dig the car up and issue a public apology.

“The local civil affairs bureau posted that the family, surnamed Jin, had been reprimanded for illegally burying the car due to feudal superstition,” SCMP said.

“Jin issued a public apology and may reportedly face fines, in addition to covering the costs of excavation, site clearance and ecological restoration,” it added.

Offered to the affluent in China and fitted with a customized number plate “8888”, the Mercedes-Benz S450L (L for Long Wheelbase) is a top-tier luxury sedan valued at around 1.1 million yuan ($161,000).
