BMW is actively working on developing its new electric cars on the Neue Klasse platform. And on its sports cars of the future. Here’s what the M3 prototype looks like when you mix the two.

Since its inception in 1986, the M3 has had four, six, and even eight cylinders. BMW’s sports sedan will keep the prevalent inline-six formula for the next generation, which will come later this decade. But there’s a twist. Joining the gas model will be this—a fully electric M3. Official images provide an early look at the hot EV based on the upcoming Neue Klasse platform developed exclusively for cars without combustion engines.

The images show a camouflaged prototype, hinting at what’s to come. The heavily camouflaged prototype has a body that’s influenced by the Neue Klasse Vision concept shown last year, with typical M design elements like flared fenders distinguishing it from the standard Neue Klasse i3 sedan. The car also has large wheels and high-performance Michelin tires.

According to BMWblog, the new M3 EV (internally known as the ZA0) is set to debut in 2027. Built on the Neue Klasse platform that shares the NA0 i3 planned for 2026, the iM3 promises high performance. The base model is expected to have around 670 horsepower, with more powerful versions likely to follow.

BMW M plans to offer several versions of the M3 and M4 (ZA2) electric models, with different power outputs to meet different needs. The fully electric M line-up will be further expanded with the arrival of the iX3 M SUV (ZA5) in 2026, as BMW M continues its push into electrification.
