The electric Ford Explorer for the European market did not meet expectations, so the company announced an updated powertrain and a new special edition.

Ford has also updated the infotainment system and added several new driver assistance systems.

The Explorer Standard Range adopts a new lithium-iron-phosphate battery and an improved electric motor that produces 140 kW/190 hp and 350 Nm of torque. Thanks to these changes, the model offers a WLTP range of up to 444 km, an increase of more than 60 km. As for the engine, power has increased by 15 kW/20 hp and 40 Nm of torque. This also reduces the acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h from 8.7 to 8.0 seconds.

In addition to the powertrain updates, the Explorer also gets an improved adaptive cruise control with traffic light recognition. It can automatically slow or stop the crossover if it detects a red or yellow light ahead. The model also gets reverse assist, which automatically records the last 50 meters of the vehicle’s movement and can replicate the steering in reverse. The system is designed to help drivers get out of tight spaces, such as alleys, and requires drivers to operate the accelerator and brakes.

The Explorer also features a new single-pedal driving mode as well as driver state assist, a driver monitoring system. If the driver fails to respond, Explorer can activate the hazard lights, come to a controlled stop, unlock the doors, and call emergency services.

The 14.6-inch infotainment system is now based on Android. The system also gets a fresh design theme that promises greater clarity and ease of use.

Buyers looking for something a little more unique can opt for the Explorer Collection. The special edition features a unique cactus-grey exterior with 20-inch wheels with a satin black finish. The model also stands out with a black roof, black skid plates, and black graphics.

The Black Onyx interior features contrasting orange accents on the seats, seatbelts, and dashboard. Elsewhere, there are black and orange speckled-effect trims, as well as “2D knit” inserts on the seats. The latter is said to be inspired by “the texture and look of high-quality sportswear.”
