Ford Finding It Difficult To Sell A Model It Discontinued 2 Years Ago

The second-generation Ford Edge is an American mid-range SUV that was offered in Europe from 2016 to 2021 and was rather unsuccessful, with only 44,748 units sold. Production of the North American version ended in 2024, but American dealers still have more than a hundred new examples in stock.

And not only that, some offer them with discounts of more than 12,000 dollars, that is, around 10,300 euros, but that doesn’t help either, so the Edge has turned into a perfect example of a “zombie car”, a model that has been officially discontinued a long time ago but is still “wandering” through dealerships.

The story is interesting because the Edge was not an unimportant model. For years in the US, it regularly sold more than 100,000 copies per year, which is not a result to be neglected. But Ford decided to stop production and steer customers toward other models, primarily the larger Explorer. According to examples cited by Carscoops , some dealers today offer new Edge models for less than $30,000, or about 25,800 euros. One 2024 Ford Edge SE in Florida is listed for $27,999, roughly €24,100, thanks to a nearly $12,000 discount. In Sacramento, the Edge SE, with a starting price of $41,520, is offered for $29,605, or about €25,500, with a $12,000 discount.

Richer versions don’t fare much better either. The Edge ST-Line, which, when new, had a price of $48,155, or about $41,500, can now be found for $38,998, or about $33,600. Those are big discounts for a new car, but apparently not enough to clear the stock completely. The ad of a dealer claiming that their Edge “will not be in stock for long” sounds particularly ironic, although the fact that such cars are still being sold two years after the model’s discontinuation is the best proof of the opposite.

Ford’s decision seems even more unusual today because the US market is still heavily reliant on SUVs, and the Edge was exactly what many buyers were looking for: mid-sized, roomy, familiar and less expensive than larger family SUVs That move is somewhat reminiscent of Ford’s European strategy, where the brand shut down the Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo and consciously withdrew from the segments in which it had strong models for decades, counting on redirecting customers towards crossovers and SUVs

The Edge hasn’t completely disappeared from Ford’s global world, though. There is still a larger Edge L in China, and that model is also imported to Mexico with a 2.0-liter EcoBoost hybrid. There are no plans to return to Europe.
