FRSC: Abuja Traffic Violators To Undergo Mandatory Psychiatric Test Before Prosecution

In a bold new move to curb reckless driving across Nigerian roads, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), FCT Sector Command, has launched a joint operation aimed at ensuring that motorists arrested for traffic violations undergo mandatory medical and psychological evaluations before facing prosecution.

The joint enforcement in the Federal Capital Territory, being implemented in accordance with Regulation 176, Sub-regulation (5) of the National Road Traffic Regulations, 2012, will be carried out in collaboration with the FCT Administration and other relevant traffic management agencies.

Consequently, this joint operation requires motorists apprehended for applicable traffic offences to undergo the prescribed evaluation at an approved government hospital, at their own expense, to determine their sanity before facing prosecution.

According to a statement by the FRSC, the joint task force will particularly target offences such as excessive overloading of vehicles, traffic light violations, route violations such as driving against traffic (one-way), indiscriminate or illegal parking, and driving dangerously.

“The enforcement is designed to go beyond conventional sanctions by identifying behavioural, psychological or medical factors that may contribute to dangerous driving, while reinforcing discipline and responsible road use among motorists and commercial transport operators.”

The Corps believes sober drivers do not routinely risk their lives and those of others through blatant lawlessness. It emphasized that the exercise is not intended to harass law-abiding motorists, but to strengthen compliance, protect lives and property, and ensure safer and more orderly roads across the FCT.

While calling on motorists and other road users to cooperate fully with members of the joint task force, the FRSC and FCT Administration reminded road users that safety remains a shared responsibility and that responsible driving is not merely a legal obligation, but a personal commitment to preserving lives.
