Jeep Wagoneer S Replaces The Grand Cherokee In Europe

Published

on

Jeep will stop selling the Grand Cherokee in Europe this year, and the Wrangler is also potentially on its way.

The moves come as Jeep continues its push into new electric vehicles, with the all-electric Wagoneer S—similar in size to the Grand Cherokee—due to arrive later this year.

Eric Laforge, who has led the brand in Europe for the past two years, confirmed at the Brussels Motor Show that a change to the Jeep model range will occur when the Wagoneer S arrives.

The move makes sense, given that the majority of Jeep sales in Europe are driven by smaller models like the Avenger. It means offering two large SUVs is unnecessary, and of the two, the Wagoneer S will contribute more to CO2 and EV sales targets because it is fully electric.

A similar scenario could also play out for the Wrangler when the Recon EV launches, as both are hardcore 4×4 models with similar positioning.

“It’s not decided at this point, but the Recon will be a strong alternative to the Wrangler,” Laforge said. “The Recon is the little brother to the Wrangler and can do a lot off-road, although the Wrangler is still the king of the mountains.”

Jeep Compass Set For European Debut

Jeep is now preparing to launch the new Compass, which, like the Avenger, will be designed, engineered, and manufactured in Europe. Unlike the Avenger, it will be exported to other markets and manufactured in other factories around the world.

“We have huge expectations that this’second stage’ will strengthen Jeep in Europe,” Laforge said of the Compass. He also said they have expertise in developing compact cars in Europe.

Laforge confirmed that the car will offer multiple powertrain options, including electric and hybrid. He added that the new Compass will be slightly larger than the current model. This will leave some space between it and the Avenger to create more room for the replacement car that sits between the pair: the Renegade. The Renegade replacement won’t arrive until 2026.

Jeep has sold 140,000 Avengers across Europe in nearly two years of sales after winning the 2023 Car of the Year award. It now accounts for about half of all Jeep sales in Europe, where the brand has captured about 1% market share.
