Mercedes Is Using 108 Pounds Of Recycled Plastic To Build The Electric C-Class
Automakers are pursuing sustainability beyond EVs as carbon neutrality goals remain a major industry focus.
The manufacturing process of a vehicle is inherently energy-intensive, encompassing everything from the initial procurement of raw materials to final assembly. Mercedes-Benz has consistently emphasised its commitment to sustainability, and it is now highlighting the environmentally conscious production methods used for the all-new electric C-Class.
The electric C-Class sets a new sustainability benchmark by incorporating 108 pounds of recycled thermoplastic materials—four times as much as combustion models. These materials are used in components like the frunk tub, wheelarch liners, and interior fabrics, reflecting Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to minimizing environmental impact through extensive use of secondary materials.
The vehicle also incorporates recycled aluminum; although specific components were not disclosed, Mercedes-Benz categorizes these materials as CO₂-reduced aluminum. This classification accounts for both the production methods employed and the overall recycled content percentage.
Mercedes-Benz is reducing the C-Class EV’s environmental impact by using renewable energy and CO₂-reduced steel and aluminum across major components. The Kecskemet plant utilizes solar power and advanced water conservation, while the company prioritizes responsible sourcing and supply chain decarbonization.
