The Lamborghini Urus will continue as a plug-in hybrid in the next generation, as CEO Stefan Winkelmann has confirmed that the release of the electric variant has been postponed to the middle of the next decade.

Winkelmann blamed the decision on the unpredictability of ever-changing regulations—something that could also delay the arrival of the first electric vehicle, the production version of the Lanzador concept, which is scheduled to launch in 2029.

The Urus, Lamborghini’s best-selling model, was set to go all-electric for its next generation before the end of the decade—a plan announced when the Urus became a hybrid-only model in 2024. Winkelmann confirmed that the Urus will now continue in SE plug-in hybrid form for an all-new generation.

“We want to have a new generation again as a plug-in hybrid,” he said. “This is something vital for us and the customers. And they were delighted when they heard about this.”

He hinted that this car would arrive in 2029, with an electric variant planned for 2035—the year when all new cars on sale in Europe will have to produce zero emissions.

He didn’t give any technical details, but it’s likely to have more power than the current 789-hp model—the most powerful version of the SUV yet, which draws power from a hybridized V8 system.

When asked if the electric Urus could launch before 2035 and be sold alongside the internal combustion version, Winkelmann said, “With the next generation decided, we have time to gauge acceptance, regulations, infrastructure, and changing consumer preferences.”

The new Urus will be a completely new generation, Winkelmann said, so it is expected to arrive with a fresh design. Asked what we can expect, he said, “Future designs of the car have not yet been determined.”
