Next-Gen Mazda MX5 To Get A Bigger Engine

Published

on

The Mazda MX-5 is one of the most popular roadsters and sports cars ever, and the current generation is now 10 years old. In an era of electrification and megalomaniacal standards, there is reason to be concerned about the future of such cars.

Along with announcing the new engine, Mazda’s general manager of design, Masashi Nakayama, said that the next-generation MX-5 intends to keep it as light as possible, which is the key recipe for a true sports car. Ideally, Mazda wants to keep the curb weight below 1,000 kilograms, which would be truly impressive.

Nakayama also confirmed that the MX-5 will remain a small car. More importantly, Mazda’s chief technical officer, Ryuichi Umeshita, confirmed that the next generation of the roadster will not have a turbocharged engine either and will instead develop the existing naturally aspirated engine. Compared to the 1.5 and 2.0 Skyactiv-G engines found in the ND, the new MX-5 should get a new Skyactiv-Z version of the four-cylinder 2.5-litre engine, which will, of course, be adapted to the needs of a small and lightweight roadster.

Mazda knows the fans of the MX-5 model and real sports cars in general very well, so they decided that the new gasoline engine would be paired with a manual transmission.

It’s not yet known when the new Mazda MX-5 will arrive, but given that the ND generation was refreshed in 2024, it’s likely to be around for a few more years.
