PLATEAU | SURFACE AREA IN KM2 (30,913) |
Plateau is the twelfth-largest state in Nigeria. Approximately in the centre of the country, it is geographically unique in Nigeria due to its boundaries of elevated hills surrounding the Jos Plateau its capital, and the entire plateau itself.
Plateau State is celebrated as “The Home of Peace and Tourism”. With natural formations of rocks, hills and waterfalls, it derives its name from the Jos Plateau and has a population of around 3.5 million people.
Travel Advisory: June 2021
This state carries a high kidnap risk especially along expressways with reduced government security forces visibility.
With a record of farmer-herdsmen conflict, the state maintains a high-risk factor for incidents of ethno-religious conflict. Certain areas have been designated as high risk, such as the villages under Bassa and Riyom LGAs.
Police intelligence reports suggest an imminent threat by BH elements in the state and increased caution and alertness is advised to be able to spot and counter possible threat events.
Importantly, non-essential trips to remote local governments should be undertaken with caution while we advise that additional layers of security should be implemented to support business travel within the state. GSF support may be required in areas with recent insecurity incidents.
