Nigerian Driver Receives Ten Strokes Of Cane For Causing Traffic Gridlock
On Thursday, a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court sentenced Okoro Chijioke, a 28-year-old bus driver, to ten cane strokes for causing road obstruction.
After Chijioke pled guilty to the charge of obstructing traffic, the magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, gave down the verdict.
According to Emmanuel, the court acknowledged that Chijioke was a young man and a first-time offender who deserved the court’s sympathy.
“The offender must not go unpunished in order to serve as a deterrent to other offenders of like minds.”
As a result, the magistrate fined the motorist and ordered the police to restore his vehicle to him.
Chijioke was brought to the Gabasawa Police Station on March 28 by Insp. Barnabas Ezekiel, according to the Police Prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo.
On the same day, Leo stated, the driver of a bus with the registration number XL 914 UWL drove his car down Kano Road by Ahmadu Bello Way in Kaduna.
He claimed that while driving the bus, Chijioke blocked traffic and refused to obey the officer in charge when told to park well before being arrested.
According to the prosecution, the offense was in violation of Section 39(3) of the Road Traffic Act.
