An official state car is a vehicle used by a government to transport the leaders of the government in an official capacity.
Occasionally, these cars can be used to transport other members of the government or visiting dignitaries from other states or countries.
Typically, an official state car is equipped with adequate security features. These vehicles may be armoured (bullet-proofed) by the manufacturer or an after-market specialist.
In Nigeria, Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) are the preferred type of vehicles by State Governors. Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Executive Governor of Lagos State is no exception to this trend.
In this article, we profile two official cars of the incumbent Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Range-Rover Sentinel SUV
One of the official vehicles in the collection of official cars of Governor Sanwo-Olu is an armoured Range-Rover Sentinel SUV.
The vehicle was once the subject of controversy. This was when the state opposition party, PDP, berated the governor for purchasing the car at a huge cost of N187 million.
However, the Sanwo-Olu-led government refuted that allegation. According to a spokesperson to the Governor, the Sanwo-Olu administration did not procure the vehicle. And also, the vehicle did not cost N187millon as alleged by the opposition.
The armoured Range Rover Sentinel is based on the top-shelf Autobiography model.
The upgrade includes armoured glass, undercarriage/roof blast protection, and an emergency escape system located in the rear luggage compartment for quick getaways.
Under the hood, a 375-hp 5.0-litre supercharged V-8 engine replaces the previous model’s 335-hp V-6, and despite adding more than a (British) ton of armour plate and glass, SVO claims a 0-60 time of 9.8 seconds and a top speed of 120 mph.
The latest Sentinel is engineered to survive unconventional forms of attack, including improvised explosive device (IED) fragmentation blasts.
Naturally, the chassis, suspension, stability control, and brakes have all been upgraded to accommodate the heft of the additional security bits, in addition to myriad other types of bullet and blast attacks.
The Cost Of The Range-Rover Sentinel
The armoured Range Rover Sentinel is based on the top-shelf Autobiography model. The non-armoured autobiography cost about N126 million. By extension, the armoured variant (Range Rover Sentinel ) should be something in the region of N200million plus.
Lexus LX 570
The current Governor of Lagos State also uses a Lexus LX570 SUV.
The Lexus LX570 is a full-size luxury SUV. It is the third-generation of the LX range of SUVs.
On April 4, 2007, Lexus debuted the LX 570 (2008 model year) at the New York International Auto Show. The LX570 is based heavily on the long-running Toyota Land Cruiser SUVs.
The LX has a V8 engine powertrain, a welded steel unibody shell combined with full-size steel ladder frame (body-on-frame construction). The LX570 can seat eight passengers. It has a new UL EV-II certified 5.7 L 3UR-FE V8 engine. The Power output is 383 hp with 546 N⋅m (403 lb-ft) of torque.
The more powerful engine helps give an increased towing capacity of up to 3,900 kg. The LX name stands for “Luxury Crossover”.
The Cost Of A Lexus LX 570
The cost of a Lexus LX 570 is in the neighbourhood of N50 million. However, the armoured variant (which we assume is the one used by the Lagos State Governor) should come with a price tag of about N120 million.
