Toyota Set To Make A Formula 1 Comeback After 15 Years
The Japanese company Toyota is returning to Formula 1 after 15 years, after signing a multi-year technical partnership agreement with the Haas team.
Toyota will not have its team in Formula 1, but will “share expertise, knowledge and resources” with the Haas team, that is, it will provide technical, production and design services.
Haas will continue to compete under its name, and Toyota will not supply the team with engines, as it did with other teams in the 2000s. The Haas team will be supplied with Ferrari until 2028.
The company’s name will be inscribed on the cars of the Haas team, as early as the next race for the US Grand Prix, on October 20 in Austin, Texas.
Toyota spent eight seasons in Formula 1, until 2009, and during that time it had 13 podium finishes, and its best result was fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship.
The head of Toyota’s racing department, Tomoya Takahashi, said the company aims to take care of the drivers, engineers and mechanics through the partnership with Haas. For 2025, Haas has already signed contracts with reserve Ferrari driver Oliver Berman and experienced Estaban Ocon, who is currently at Alpino.
– Some might prematurely conclude that Toyota has returned to Formula 1, but that is not the case. Through this partnership, we believe that we could develop drivers who could regularly compete in Formula 1 in the future – said Takahashi.
Since leaving Formula 1, Toyota has concentrated on other racing competitions, including NASCAR and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
