UK-based Environmental Activists The Tyre Extinguishers claim it has deflated tyres on nearly 2,000 SUVs across the country in the past four weeks as the group continues to urge supporters to “make it impossible to own a huge polluting 4×4 (SUV) in the world’s urban areas.

The Tyre Extinguishers describes SUVs as “a climate disaster”, “dangerous” and “unnecessary”, as the petrol and diesel-powered models are generally believed to be less fuel-efficient than cars.

The group, which first took action on March 7, said in a statement :

“So far, the Tyre Extinguishers have disarmed nearly 2,000 SUVs in the UK, in Brighton, London, Manchester, Birmingham, Sheffield, Bristol and Edinburgh, in repeated actions.

“Plans are being made to launch the Tyre Extinguishers leaflet in four other languages as interest grows internationally.”

Replying a tweet by The Tyre Extinguishers, a user Tcs106 noted that collapsing the sidewalls of tyres reduces road safety!”

“Please be aware that collapsing the sidewall of a tyre can weaken it or damage the internal structure of the tyre. Yes you can reinflate it but it will never be as safe. Letting down tyres reduces road safety!”

Another user said :

“1. Fellony and propety damage.
2. It can damage a tyre – there could be a need to buy a new one (ain’t so good for environment) and also adds to felony charges. Horribile idea.”

Other countries

There are claims that the tyres of SUVs, popularly known as gas guzzlers, have been targeted in the city of Zurich in Switzerland and in The Hague in the Netherlands.

Just like The Tyre Extinguishers, far-left Canada-based activist group Adbusters have also cooked up a new plans that will make it impossible to own the huge polluting SUVs in the country.

Adbusters recently took to Twitter, where it instructed its followers to use pebbles to keep the tyre valves open, instead of slashing the sidewalls and committing vandalism.
