Official: Mercedes Discontinues The C63 AMG’s Four-Cylinder Engine

The most controversial AMG, the C63 with a four-cylinder engine and plug-in hybrid drive, will soon be shelved. It will no longer be produced.

After several months of rumors that Mercedes wants to phase out the criticized electrified powertrain, the man from Mercedes has now officially confirmed it. The sports sedan remains in the program but with a bigger engine, without hybrid support and under different names. AMG boss Michael Schiebe told Edmunds that the current C63 SE Performance will give way to a gasoline engine. But it will not be a V8, as part of the tradition from earlier AMG models, but a new solution.

It is a 3.0-liter turbo gasoline inline 6 engine, the M256, from the CLE 53 model. The power of the mild hybrid system is 330 kW (449 hp) and 560 Nm of torque.

In an interview with Edmunds, Schiebe said:





– This means that we will also have C53 in our portfolio. We take over the internal combustion engine from the CLE53. No hybrid engine – a pure inline 6.

Even if the inline 6 engine’s performance increases, it is difficult to imagine that the new setup will match the C63 SE Performance model’s figures (680 hp and 1020 Nm). However, the weight should also be significantly reduced, as the plug-in hybrid with a four-cylinder engine weighs 2.2 tons.

Schiebe told Edmunds that the market and customers did not reject AMG with a four-cylinder engine, but the problem was in adapting that system to Euro 7 norms. If a man says so…
