Volkswagen Refreshes The California/Multivan MPVs
Instead of a major redesign, the German manufacturer opted for a series of targeted improvements that bring a more modern look, more advanced technology, and more practicality in everyday use.
It’s a philosophy that has accompanied the legendary Bulli for years. Instead of a complete overhaul, Volkswagen is improving what drivers and passengers use most, from the cockpit and multimedia to the driver assistance systems.
The exterior features a redesigned front end with larger LED headlights, new daytime running lights and a strip between the headlights. There are also new body colors, new wheels and, for the first time, a matte paint finish.
The biggest changes are inside, however. The new infotainment system uses a 12.9-inch screen, while the digital instruments and user interface have been completely redesigned. This brings the model technologically closer to newer models such as the ID. Buzz and the redesigned Caddy.
The controls have also been simplified. The automatic DSG transmission is now controlled by a paddle shifter on the steering wheel, while illuminated touch-sensitive sliders are responsible for controlling the climate control and audio system.
The wireless smartphone charger now supports charging up to 25 W, and the USB-C ports offer up to 60 W. Rear passengers have been given additional charging ports, and the ambient lighting has also been improved.
Travel Assist can now recognize traffic lights and, for the first time, supports assisted lane changes on highways.
Emergency Assist, a system that can control the vehicle to a stop in the event of a driver’s health problems, remains part of the equipment.
Customers will still be able to choose from the familiar powertrains: the 2.0 TDI diesel engine with 150 hp, the 2.0 TSI petrol engine with 204 hp and the plug-in hybrid eHybrid 4Motion with a combined output of 245 hp.
The California also received the same technological and design upgrades but without any changes to the basic concept. The Beach, Coast and Ocean versions remain on offer, and a new special edition, the Generation, with a two-tone body and more equipment.
A particularly interesting novelty for camping enthusiasts concerns the California eHybrid 4Motion version. The electric air conditioning system can now operate for up to eight hours without interruption and can heat, cool or ventilate the interior while camping, parking or charging.
The California Ocean still retains the classic auxiliary heating, which will be especially appreciated by those who often travel and camp in the colder parts of the year.
