Toyota May Give The Prius The GR Sport Treatment Send-Off
Toyota may be planning a performance-oriented GR-badged Prius to debut as early as January, potentially serving as a final send-off if rumors of the model’s discontinuation prove accurate.
Japanese outlet Creative311 cites Best Car as reporting that Toyota is weighing whether to phase out the Prius over slow sales (down 42% in the States this year), with the next Corolla range possibly expanding to fill the gap. Nothing is confirmed, and Toyota hasn’t commented. But if the world’s most famous hybrid is nearing the end, the company could send it off with either a full GR or, more likely, a milder GR Sport version at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January 2027.
Take these reports with a grain of salt, as similar rumors have circulated before. However, the 2023 Prius 24h Le Mans Centennial GR Edition concept proves Toyota has explored a performance-oriented version, featuring an aggressive, aero-focused design inspired by the GR010 Hybrid.
The modifications to the vehicle were even more extensive behind the scenes. Toyota incorporated rear wheel spats featuring integrated vents, alongside a spoiler, an oversized diffuser, and additional carbon fiber elements.
The concept’s main flaw was its standard hybrid engine. While the current 220-hp Prius Prime is capable, Toyota could easily upgrade performance. Borrowing the 324-hp plug-in hybrid powertrain from the RAV4 GR Sport—or even the 264-hp version—would turn the Prius into a much more formidable machine.
While current reports regarding Toyota’s potential plans for a performance-oriented Prius remain speculative, as do rumors concerning the model’s possible discontinuation, the prospect is intriguing. Should the Prius indeed be approaching the end of its production cycle, transitioning the world’s most recognizable hybrid from an efficiency-focused icon to a high-performance, 300-plus-horsepower GR variant would serve as a compelling final chapter for the nameplate.
