Tanzania is set to do a test run of its first high-speed electric trains this month.

The trains would be one of Africa’s high-speed trains with projected speeds of up to 160 mph.

The train will run on a Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) tracks.

The first trials for the train will be conducted later this month; this is according to the Minister for Works, Transport and Communications, Eng. Isack Kamwele.

The first phase of the Standard Guage Railway track covers a distance of 300km. It runs from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro with 6 stations in between. While the test-run will commence in July, full operations will start in December this year, Kamwele reportedly said.

There will be three passenger trains in phase one at the starting point that will be taking daily round trips between the two cities. Each passenger train is capable of making 9 to 12 trips a day or even more.

Ghana Vs. Nigeria Railway Line Construction: The Costs Will Shock You!

The train will use concrete sleepers which improve durability and give the railway network capacity to carry up to 35 tonnes per axle loads. The rails can survive up to 40 years before any major repairs while the train bridge can survive up to 100 years.

So far, over 26,000 employment opportunities have been created by the project. More job opportunities will be created in the second phase and subsequent ones and once the stations become fully operational.

The rails can survive up to 40 years before any major repairs while the train bridge can survive up to 100 years.

The 300-km electric train railway project cost the Tanzanian Government US $1.9bn (Tshs.4.3 trillion).
