BMW’s policy with its luxury flagships, the 6 Series and 8 Series, has been the subject of debate for decades. After rumors started a year ago about the shutdown of the current 8 Series to make way for the return of the 6 Series, it is now known that the “eight” is indeed nearing the end of its life.

Production ends next year, but before the final farewell, BMW is cooking up a treat—a special edition arriving later this year that will likely be the last farewell to this elegant GT.

Considering that the high-end M8 has already passed into history, the basis for the new special edition will be its “younger brother,” the powerful M850i. This information was confirmed by Frank van Meel, the head of the BMW M department, in a recent interview with the Bimmer Today portal.

Expect exclusive equipment details, unique colors and accessories that will differentiate it from standard models.

The changes under the hood are unlikely, but the M850i has nothing to be ashamed of anyway. Its 4.4-liter V8 turbo gasoline engine develops an impressive 530 horsepower, enough to propel the coupe version to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds. Frank van Meel hinted that the 8 Series is not the only surprise BMW has in store. “A few more things are being prepared,” he said cryptically, without going into details. However, there is no shortage of candidates for special series.

One of the most obvious is the 3 Series, which celebrates its grand 50th anniversary this year. Along with it, the X5, X7 and Z4 models have also been on the market for a while in their current generations, so limited editions could serve as a great way to keep customers interested. The Z4 model, by the way, is expected to remain on offer until May 2026, when it will be discontinued.
