BREAKING: Imo Airport On Fire, Passengers Flee (PHOTOS)
A sudden fire breakout occurred earlier today at the arrival section of the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State.
The inferno sent travelers scampering for safety.
According to a report by Punch newspaper, the fire affected the arrival department where renovation work was being carried out, but that the outbreak itself was contained by the fire service after nearly an hour.
He said, “It happened at the arrival department of the airport where the authority was carrying out renovation work.
“It would have caused bigger havoc but for the arrival of men of the fire service.
“It started around 2:10 pm and raged for 50 minutes. It damaged equipment and infrastructure, but the rescue work assisted in salvaging the situation.”
The cause of the fire was not known as at the time of filing this report but a source at the Airport said that there was an on-going renovation at the arrival hall, which was totally razed.
According to the report, the fire which raged for about one hour started around 2:10pm.
It took efforts from men of the Fire service and airport workers to put off the fire.
