Mazda Showcases The Iconic SP Electric Coupe With A Rotary Engine

Meet the Mazda Iconic SP. The Mazda Iconic SP is an electrically powered study model with a rotary engine on board. Such a drivetrain is not new at Mazda and the Iconic SP also seems less new than you might think.

Although, new… Mazda already showed a glimpse of a similar study model last year, which it then called Vision Study. Mazda describes the Iconic SP as a compact sports car ‘of a new era’, with which it says it wants to show that it still has a passion for sporty models. The Mazda Iconic SP has a long, low hood with relatively small headlights and a buttock with small round LED taillights.

“We are determined to preserve the driving pleasure that the MX-5 offers. This Iconic SP offers the solution,” said Mazda. The brand thus links the Iconic SP directly to the MX-5. If we ignore the roof, this could indeed hint at a new MX-5. Because the car has a relatively small battery pack in theory, it would not be as heavy as an EV.

There are no extensive technical specifications, although Mazda does say that the Iconic SP has 370 hp, weighs 1,450 kilos, and is 4.18 meters long. A size larger than the MX-5, because it reaches 3.92 meters.
