Mercedes-AMG Marks 30 Years Of Providing Official Safety And Medical Cars At Formula 1 Races

Mercedes-AMG marks 30 years of providing official FIA F1 Safety and Medical Cars at all Formula 1 Races. 

Tradition began on 30 June 1996 with the deployment Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG support vehicles at the Formula 1 race in Magny-Cours.

To date, a total of 13 different models have been used as Safety Cars and eight different models as Medical Cars.

Since 2022, the GT Black Series has been the official Safety Car, while the GT 63 S 4MATIC+ has been the official Medical Car.

This year marks 30 years since Mercedes-AMG has been providing official FIA F1 Safety Cars and Medical Cars for Formula 1, a tradition that began on 30 June 1996 with the deployment of Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG support vehicles at the Formula 1 race in Magny-Cours.

To date, a total of 13 different models have been used as Safety Cars and eight different models as Medical Cars. Mercedes-AMG provides a total of three Safety Cars and two Medical Cars each season, two of which are on site and ready for deployment at each race weekend.

During the race, the Medical Car stands next to the Safety Car in the pit lane, ready to shuttle FIA emergency doctors to the scene of the accident as fast as possible if Race Control gives the signal over the radio.

“Safety is an absolutely central value of our brand and our products. That is why we have been providing the Official FIA F1 Safety and Medical Car in Formula 1 since 1996,” said Christoph Sagemüller, Head of Mercedes-AMG Motorsport.

Since 2022, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series has been the Official FIA F1 Safety Car, while the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ has been the official F1 Medical Car. Both vehicles are also currently in use and perform their duties in Formula 2 and also Formula 3.

“For Mercedes-AMG, Formula 1 is not only a sporting platform, but also an environment in which the performance, reliability, and safety of our vehicles become visible under extreme conditions,” Mercedes-AMG Motorsport boss adds.

From 2001 to 2003, the high-performance estate car for the FIA emergency doctors was the C 32 AMG—powered by the supercharged 3.2-litre AMG engine with 354 hp, making it the most powerful variant of the C-Class at the time.

Following its retirement from its F1 roles, the Mercedes-Benz C 32 AMG Official FIA F1 Medical Car from the 203 model series was retired to the Collection Room 3: Gallery of Helpers at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.
