New Mid-Engine Sports Car Has Been Confirmed By Toyota

Toyota teased us with an MR2-like concept car over two years ago, but there hasn’t been any concrete sign of life since then. Until now.

In the fall of 2023, Toyota presented us with a delightfully sporty concept car: the FT-SE . A fully electric two-seater, it could be seen as a spiritual successor to the Toyota MR2, despite its powertrain. That too was a relatively compact sporty two-seater, but it had a combustion engine. It was a mid-engined concept, something we’ve only recently seen in a unique GR Yaris from Toyota. Now, however, something more concrete is in the works, and we’re looking at the FT-SE again.

In an interview with Automotive News, Gazoo Racing CEO Tomoya Takahashi revealed that a mid-engine, sporty production car is being developed. He didn’t provide details yet, but he did warn that it will take some time before the car is ready. According to the current schedule, it would take another four or five years. For the record, this is a combustion engine car, while the FT-SE was an electric car. Don’t be surprised if Toyota does pull that design off the shelf. Perhaps with a few modernizations here and there, as it still needs to look fresh in 2030.
