Stolen Toyota Camry Recovered In 8 Hours By Ogun Police, Returned To Indian Owner

The Ogun State Police Command has handed over a recovered 2016 Toyota Camry sedan to its rightful owner, Mr Abhay Singh, an Indian national based at the Ilupeju Industrial Estate, Lagos, after the vehicle was stolen by a newly employed driver.

The vehicle was reportedly stolen on September 9, 2026, after the driver, identified as Waidi Olaide Kolawale, allegedly told his employer that he was taking the Camry to a nearby vulcaniser to repair a tyre. Kolawale was reportedly employed only two days before the incident.

Following the report, the stolen Toyota Camry was electronically tracked to the Ifo axis in Ogun State. The information was relayed to the Divisional Police Officer of Ifo Division, CSP Kamorudeen Olabisi, who immediately deployed surveillance and anti-robbery operatives.

The Police Command said that the stolen Toyota Camry was tracked through several locations before locating it at a hotel in Ifo at about 8:30 p.m., less than eight hours after the theft was reported.

According to the police, Kolawale fled after sighting the operatives, taking the vehicle’s ignition key with him. However, his alleged accomplice, identified as Monday Adetunji, was arrested at the scene.

Preliminary investigations reportedly revealed that the suspects had approached a mechanic with plans to remove the Toyota Camry’s catalytic converter. The mechanic, however, allegedly declined to carry out the job.

After ownership verification, the recovered Camry was formally handed over to Singh by CSP Olabisi at the Ifo Divisional Police Headquarters. Police said efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspect and establish the full circumstances surrounding the theft.

The Ogun Police Command advised vehicle owners to use tracking devices and additional anti-theft measures such as steering and tyre locks. It also urged motorists to exercise due diligence when entrusting vehicles to drivers, while hoteliers were encouraged to maintain accurate guest and vehicle records and report suspicious activities promptly.
