Gate Erected On Asaba End Of The Niger Bridge Dismantled (VIDEO)

A gate erected at the Asaba end of the Niger Bridge has been dismantled.  Recall that the Anambra State government reportedly erected the gate. It took the decision in order to check the violators of the inter-state travel ban.

However, the dismantling of the gate was supervised by the Delta state coordinator of the Covid-19 monitoring group.

Following the closure of land borders by the Delta State government over coronavirus,  Anambra Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, announced the closure of Onitsha Bridgehead with immediate effect.

Only vehicles transporting food items and medicines are being allowed to pass the Niger Bridge head.

In a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Solo Chukwulobelu, Obiano directed security agencies to implement the order.

It said:  “This is to notify Ndi Anambra and motorists in the state, and those wishing to pass through Anambra state that the Government of Delta state has announced the closure of all its land borders with effect from Sunday, 29th of March, 2020.

“Motorists will not be able to drive into Delta state as a result of the border closure order in place.

“The government of Anambra state is also announcing the closure of Onitsha Head bridge with immediate effect to discourage vehicles queuing up on the bridge.

“Motorists should also note that the government of Enugu state has announced the closure of its land borders. This took effect from Tuesday, March 31, 2020.

“Only vehicles transporting food items and medicines will be allowed passage.

“The government of Anambra state hereby reiterates its earlier directive for people to stay at home and observe strictly the coronavirus advisory and directives earlier issued”.

The Anambra State government closed the state’s section of the River Niger Bridge. They did this by mounting a giant gate at a spot on the bridge.

Recall that, the Federal Government had last month banned inter-state travel as part of measures to check the spread of COVID-19.
