Polestar Wants To Make Cars Part Of The Power Grid

Published

Polestar is focusing more heavily on ‘vehicle to grid’, where electric cars play a role in the power grid. To this end, it is setting up a project in Sweden.

Electric cars are dependent on a well-functioning power grid, and they have a special role in this. With ‘vehicle to grid’ (V2G), in addition to purchasing power, they can also supply power back. This buffer function can help to relieve the power grid or provide support during peak times, but it can also be used, for example, to reduce electricity costs in your home. Suppose you have been charged for free at work; in theory, you can use some of that free electricity at home. Polestar sees a future in it and now announces that it has started a major V2G development project.

Polestar wants to work with Swedish grid operators, an energy distributor, a home charging provider, and researchers from a technical university, among others, to “find potential business models for V2G and test tangible use cases that are scalable and applicable.” Together with the California Energy Commission, Polestar is working on a plan to soon put it into practice in California. It looks like the American state will soon have the scoop.
