Ford has already discontinued numerous models (Fiesta, Mondeo), and the Focus will be retired in 2025. Why is Ford getting rid of its cars? Because it’s “getting out of the business of boring cars and into the business of legendary vehicles”.

According to Motor1, this is what general manager Jim Farley told the British magazine CAR in a recent interview during which he admitted that these cars were “loved by a lot of customers”. Despite being quite popular, Farley says it’s simply not worth investing more money in cars like the Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo, unlike commercial vehicles, for example.

Direct replacements for these cars are unfortunately not planned. Instead, Ford offers several electric SUVs (Explorer and Capri), and the very successful Puma crossover will soon get a fully electric version.

Ford of Europe recently abandoned its plan to be an electric-only brand from 2030.

But killing those “boring” cars puts the Volkswagen Group, Toyota, Stellantis and Hyundai in a good position since they still offer regular cars. As we previously reported, Ford’s sales in Europe are declining. In the first six months of 2024, their sales fell by 16.9% in the European Union, EFTA and the UK. This led to a drop in market share from 4.1% to 3.3%.
