Honda and Sony have officially launched their inaugural collaboration, specifically to compete against new tech giants entering the automotive sector. The Afeela 1 sedan, however, is targeted towards an affluent market.

The automotive industry now faces no barriers. Traditional manufacturers are no longer the sole producers of vehicles as major new players are emerging. Companies like CATL are venturing into integrated chassis design, and Xiaomi is gaining traction with its new Xiaomi SU7. Today marks the unveiling of Honda and Sony’s first collaborative project—a large electric sedan named Afeela 1, which will initially be available only in the United States, where it will also be manufactured. Upon reviewing its technical specifications, it’s evident that this product embodies a distinctly “American” spirit, reminiscent of the Tesla Model S, which was Tesla’s first significant mainstream vehicle at its onset. Will SHM (Sony Honda Mobility) achieve similar success?

Nearly 500 hp

This spacious road car, designed with a smooth appearance reminiscent of a beach pebble, maintains an unremarkable aesthetic. It features nearly all the latest design elements typical of Asian electric vehicles, primarily Chinese, showcasing front and rear bands alongside advanced technological components. Notably, since Sony leads the project, the computer and software aspects are emphasized. A distinctive visual feature of the Afeela 1 is its lidar, positioned atop the car and resembling an air intake, which enables its autonomous driving capabilities. In contrast, Tesla opts to use cameras exclusively, forgoing lidar technology.

Measuring 4.91 meters in length, the Afeela 1 is equipped with a 91 kWh battery, which appears unremarkable at first glance. Although we might have anticipated a bit more innovation from these Japanese manufacturers, it offers a maximum charging power of 150 kW, indicating a voltage of 400 V, and a driving range of 480 km. The Afeela 1 operates as an all-wheel-drive vehicle powered by two motors that generate approximately 490 hp.

Not given

Of course, such an all-electric road car won’t be for the general public. The Signature Edition will cost $102,900 at launch, and a cheaper version at $89,900 will come later, with smaller wheels that will probably improve comfort. Honda specifies that some components of this Afeela 1 will be found in the new Honda Zero electric range, which we will discover soon. As for marketing in Europe, we shouldn’t expect to see this Afeela 1 before the end of the decade, if the sauce takes, of course.
