Toyota Continues To See No Use For The Electric “Yaris”
Brands like Citroën, Renault, Kia, and Volkswagen are entering the small electric vehicle market, but Toyota is still not participating.
The Citroën ë-C3, Peugeot e-208, Renault 5, Volkswagen ID2, and Kia EV2: the list of EVs already available or coming to the market in the B-segment is getting longer and longer. Toyota is taking it a bit easier in the EV field and is not getting involved in that corner of the car world for the time being. An electric Yaris is not yet on the agenda for the Japanese. This is evident from the words of Toyota Motor Europe marketing boss Andrea Carlucci in an interview with Autocar.
The Italian says that Toyota does not think it is time for it yet: “We deliberately started in fast-growing segments. The right moment will come, but it is not now.” However, that does not mean that an electric Yaris-like is ruled out. “The idea is there (that it will come eventually; ed.), but we are not talking about it yet.”
Last year, Carlucci also revealed that we shouldn’t expect an electric Aygo counterpart for the time being. That was somewhat remarkable because Toyota had already briefly shown an Aygo X in the form of the bZ Small Crossover, which, in theory, has an electric drivetrain. However, we haven’t heard anything more about that since then, either.
