In America, Toyota’s EV Sales Have Surged By 136%
Toyota’s U.S. electric vehicle sales surged 136.3% in the first half of 2026, with 21,855 units delivered according to Cox Automotive.
The Toyota bZ emerged as the brand’s primary success story, recording 17,553 sales during the first half of the year. The recently introduced bZ Woodland contributed 554 deliveries, while the new Toyota C-HR EV accounted for 3,748 units. Growth accelerated significantly in the second quarter, with Toyota selling 11,826 electric vehicles between April and June—a substantial 225% increase year-over-year. The established bZ model generated 7,524 of these deliveries, while the early performance of the bZ Woodland and the highly agile C-HR—both of which debuted in Q2—remains particularly encouraging.
Cox Automotive data shows new EVs average $54,532—about $5,000 more than standard vehicles—while used EVs average $37,083. This price gap has driven a 22% drop in new EV sales and a record 29% rise in used EV sales this quarter. As buyers shift toward affordability, Toyota is well-positioned with four new models priced under $30,000.
Toyota’s EV growth reflects a broader shift. While hybrids now outperform gas models, the EV market is intensifying, with BYD recently surpassing Tesla globally. Despite trailing EV specialists, Toyota’s long-term strategy of balancing new electric models with a strong hybrid lineup is gaining momentum and strengthening its position in the electrified market.
