Hit-and-run Driver Who Killed Two LAWMA Sweepers Turns Himself In To Police

Hit-and-run driver who killed 2 LAWMA sweepers carrying out their duties by the roadside turns himself in to police.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the driver would be charged to court for manslaughter.
The driver of the Honda Accord sedan that rammed into two Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) sweepers while reportedly being chased by Lagos State Task Force officials has turned himself in to the police.
The two LAWMA street sweepers were carrying out their duties by the roadside along Gbagada Expressway on Monday morning when they met their tragic death.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the development to Punch on Tuesday, said the driver would be charged to court on Tuesday for manslaughter.
He said :
“The owner of the Honda Saloon car turned himself in yesterday (Monday) night and he will be taken to court today for manslaughter.
“It was not murder, it was an accident and was not deliberate, so he will be charged with manslaughter.”
The Lagos State Task Force had earlier debunked the news making rounds that the Agency was involved in the car chase which led to the accident and tragic death of the two LAWMA officials.
Speaking on the unfortunate incident, the Chairman of the Agency, CSP Shola Jejeloye, said :
“It is a very sad and unfortunate, as well as an avoidable incident, that led to the loss of lives. As an Agency, we have a very firm belief that a traffic offence is not a criminal offence, as such, a traffic offender may be left to escape from the scene of the offence rather than allow such an offender to create madness on the road, that could lead to loss of life”, he said.
Jejeloye further disclosed that :
“Investigation is ongoing to uncover those involved in this terrible incident. Anyone found culpable will be made to answer for his crime. The alleged motorist who evaded arrest and knocked down these two innocent workers will also be tried and prosecuted. In this era of social media, there is no hiding place for any criminal”.
