Jimmy Carter, The First U.S President To Visit Nigeria, Dies At 100
James Earl Carter Jr. ‘Jimmy Carter’, who served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, dies aged 100.
Carter, who served just one-term in the White House, was the longest-lived president of the United States.
In Nigeria, he will best be remembered as the first U.S. president to make official state visit to the country.
During his visit from March 31 to April 3 1978, he rode in a parade car alongside Nigerian leader, Olusegun Obasanjo.
James Earl Carter Jr. ‘Jimmy Carter’, who served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, has died aged 100. Carter, who served just one-term in the White House, was the longest-lived president of the United States.
The former US president was awarded the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for work to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.
His Visit To Nigeria
In Nigeria, Jimmy Carter will best be remembered as the first U.S. president to make an official state visit to the West African nation from March 31 to April 3 1978 to improve relations.
Upon his arrival at the Murtala Muhammed international airport on March 31, Carter was greeted by Nigeria’s Head of State, Lt Gen Olusegun Obasanjo, before being driven immediately to State House on the marina of Lagos Island.
During his visit from March 31 to April 3 1978, he rode in a parade car alongside Nigerian leader, Olusegun Obasanjo.
Along the half-hour motorcade route, thousands of Nigerians lined the highway in the pre-midnight darkness, shouting “Hooray Carter” and waving signs reading “Welcome Carter.”
At the official welcoming ceremony held at Dodan military barracks on April 1st 1978, Jimmy Carter rode in a parade car alongside Nigerian, leader Olusegun Obasanjo.
