Mercedes Says It Will Continue Production Of The V12 Engine

V12 engines are not going extinct anytime soon, according to Mercedes. The car manufacturer recently announced that the V12 will remain in production for a while longer.

Markus Schaefer, the brand’s technical director, said the brand will “continue to offer V12 engines.” However, Schaefer did not provide any additional details, such as displacement, expected models, power, or whether it will be a hybrid. He didn’t even confirm whether the engine was Euro 7 compliant, adding, “I won’t say anything more, but it’s coming.”

Mercedes currently offers a V12 in only one model, the Maybach S680, and the number of V12-powered cars continues to dwindle. Only 11 cars with that many cylinders will be available in 2025, and the selection is limited to Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, Pagani, Aston Martin, and a few others.

The V12 in the Maybach is a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged unit that produces 621 horsepower.

If the V12 is going to power more models than the Maybach in Mercedes’ future, it will likely have some form of electric assist.

Also, AMG is preparing to replace the 2.0-liter turbo with a 3.0-liter straight six in the Mercedes-AMG C63 SE Performance model.

Although there is no official timeline, Mercedes board member for sales and marketing Matthias Geiser has confirmed this replacement for the Performance variant of the next-generation C-Class.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain in the current C63 contrasts with previous versions of the C63, which had V8 engines. In addition, AMG’s abandonment of the V8 engine for the C63 occurred despite rivals BMW and Audi sticking with six-cylinder engines.

News of a switch from a four-cylinder to a 3.0-liter inline-six engine has been circulating for months, and in a recent interview with Auto Express, Geiser said that such a switch will be made.
