Road accident involving a car, cement truck and commercial bus, claims 14 lives along Obajana-Lokoja road in Kogi State.
Fourteen persons were reportedly killed on Wednesday in a fatal collision involving three vehicles in old Akpata along Obajana-Lokoja road in Kogi State.
The crash was confirmed by the state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Solomon Aghure. Aghure said the accident happened around 12:50 p.m. at Apata community.
According to Aghure, the accident involved a Honda Accord; a white Toyota Hiace passenger bus; and an articulated DAF truck conveying cement from Obajana.
Aghure added that the injured were taken to the hospital for treatment while corpses were deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja.
The sector commander blamed the accident on tyre burst and reckless driving. He also stated that further investigation will be carried out to get more facts about it.
The Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, while sympathising with families of the victims, urged FRSC to ensure only road worthy vehicles ply our roads.
Part of the statement released by Fanwo, reads :
“The governor, government and people of Kogi State express deep sympathy over the demise of 14 passengers of a bus involved in a ghastly accident at old Akpata, along Lokoja-Obajana road today (Wednesday).
It is indeed a sad occurrence and a shame that we lost such promising souls in such a pathetic circumstance.
“As a government, we will strengthen our road safety measures to ensure that avoidable loss of lives is averted.
We also call on the FRSC to intensify its surveillance along the roads and ensure that road users obey traffic laws as well as ensure that only road worthy vehicles ply our roads. Every life is precious,”
