Three Boeing Dreamlifter cargo planes flew in convoy on Monday to deliver PPE for local healthcare workers in South Carolina.

The distinctive 747 Dreamlifters flew in convoy from the United States’ west coast to Charleston, South Carolina earlier on Monday.

The three planes, lined up nose to tail on the tarmac at Boeing’s South Carolina Dreamliner plant; created a scene that Boeing CEO David Calhoun said has “never been seen before.”

The oversized cargo planes supplied more than 150,000 protective eye goggles and face shields for the hospital.

Boeing donated the cost of the mission transport, the fourth COVID-19 related cargo transport mission.

With this shipment, the Dreamlifters joins other heavy airlifters around the world in flying medical missions related to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Other cargo planes that also came to the rescue includes the Antonov An-225 Mriya and Air Force C-17 Globemaster III

The Boeing 747 Dreamlifter, also known as the Boeing 747-400 Large Cargo Freighter, is a wide-body cargo aircraft.

It is used for transporting Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft components to assembly plants from suppliers around the world.

At 65,000 cubic feet the Dreamlifter can hold three times the volume of a 747-400F freighter. It has a maximum payload capacity of 250,000 pounds (125 tons).

In comparison, the World’s largest cargo aircraft, Antonov An-225 Mriya, has an internal cargo volume of 1,200 cubic meters, or 42,377 cubic feet.

The An-225 is capable of lifting a maximum 551,155 pounds, or 275 tons, nearly double that of Boeing 747-8 freighter.
