10 facts about the 1,750 horsepower, $1.9m SSC Tuatara hypercar that just dethroned the Bugatti Super Sport 300+ as the “World’s Fastest Production Car”.

On October 10, 2020, American automobile manufacturer SSC North America took a 1,750 horsepower SSC Tuatara supercar to a seven-mile stretch of Highway in Nevada where it was powered to record-setting top speed of 316.11 mph.

1) 316.11 mph, the new Speed Record

Behind the wheels is Formula 1 driver, Oliver Webb, who drove the car in both directions, setting speeds of 301.07 mph and 331.15 mph, and a fastest two-way average speed of 316.11 mph.

2) It could go further than 331 mph

According to the driver, Webb, the supercar could have gone faster further than 331 mph with better conditions.

“There was definitely more in there,”

“And with better conditions, I know we could have gone faster. As I approached 331 mph, the Tuatara climbed almost 20 mph within the last five seconds. It was still pulling well. As I told [CEO] Jerod [Shelby], the car wasn’t running out of steam yet. The crosswinds are all that prevented us from realizing the car’s limit.”





3) Owner

This record-setting supercar is one of just 100 that will be built as well as the first customer car. It was delivered to its buyer, car enthusiast Dr. Larry Caplin, last year.

Caplin has promised to donate $316,000 to community programs to match the 316mph record speed.

4) Cost

The automaker plans to build just 100 copies of the SSC Tuatara supercar. Each of these supercar starts at $1.6m and maxed out at $1.9m for the fully loaded variant.

These prices, equates to ₦609.6m and ₦723.9 million in Naira respectively. It excludes the destination and clearing charges.

5) The Tuatara is not the first car from the company to dethrone Bugatti

Back in 2007, the company’s Ultimate Aero hypercar set a new speed record of 257.41mph, dethroning the Bugatti Veyron’s previous record of 253.81mph from 2005.

6) Engine

It is powered by twin-turbo charged 5.9-litre V8 engine, producing a massive 1,750 hp on E85 ethanol fuel, and 1,350 hp, using 91 octane unleaded.

7) Power of three (3) 2020 Ferrari Portofino sports car

The record breaking 1,750 horsepower Tuatara has the power of three (3) 2020 Ferrari Portofino sports car. Portofino has the power of 591 horses.

8) Other New Records

In addition to settings a new production car top speed record, the Shelby Supercars (SSC) Tuatara also set a new record for the :

-Fastest flying mile on a public road, at 313.12 mph;

-Fastest flying kilometer on a public road, at 517.16 km/h); and the

-Highest speed achieved on a public road, at 331.15 mph.

9) 33 mph and 11 mph

That’s how much Tuatara went than the Koenigsegg Agera and Bugatti Super Sport 300+ did in 2017 and 2019 respectively.

10) Dethrones Koenigsegg Agera RS

SSC Tuatara officially dethrones the Koenigsegg Agera RS Hypercar and not Bugatti Super Sport 300+ as the world’s fastest production car.

Koenigsegg Agera achieved a two-run average of 277.9 mph (444.6 kph) on a closed stretch of Route 160 in Nevada in 2017.
