Polish transport operator, PKS Gdynia, has announced a change in the name of bus route to Hel from 666 to 669 after bowing to pressure from Christian groups and individuals for almost 10 years.
The Polish seaside resort of Hel, which is popular with holidaymakers for its remote beaches, is reached by bus route 666, which references to the biblical “number of the beast”.
But from June 24, travellers won’t be able to journey along the highway to Hel on the 666 bus after the company which operates the route said it will turn “the last 6 upside down” are being bombarded with complaints that it was “satanic stupidity”.
Marcin Szwaczyk, spokesperson for PKS Gdynia, said :
“The management board buckled under the weight of letters and requests that were sent to us, maybe not in large numbers, but cyclically for many years with a request to change the line number.”
In 2018, Catholic group Fronda, blasted the bus route as “scandalous anti-Christian propaganda”, warning that it was “just the tip of the iceberg of a much greater problem.”
“Hell is the negation of humanity. It is eternal death and suffering. You can only laugh at this reality if you simply don’t understand what it is,” it wrote in an article.
However, Szwaczyk noted that route 666, which has long been considered a joke by many, could return if passengers demand it.
“If in fact the response is large and strong enough to restore the line 666, it seems to me that we will listen to our passengers and change this number,” he said.
